Creating Memories... One Ride At A Time!
September 28, 2017 - A regional iconic outing...the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad Train/HOBO Railroad is a remarkable way to view and appreciate the New Hampshire's Lakes Region - traveling from Meredith NH along Meredith Bay, it is a downhill ride to Weirs Beach. Shortly after departure we pass through an area with an amazing unobstructed view of Lake Winnipesaukee with Mt Belknap in the background. Taking us along a stretch of ride level with the lake only to arrive at beloved Weirs Beach, home of the MV Mt Washington. Formerly a summer colony for tourists who would ride up from Boston on the Boston and Maine Railroad, Weirs Beach was a center disembarking for visitors to either continue their trip along the lake using the the railroad owned steamship, or stay and vacation at one of the Weirs Beach Grand Hotels. Today, the strip is occupied by arcades, amusements and restaurants, and has become well known as the epi-center of the regions Annual Motorcycle event that began in 1923.
After a brief stop to pick up passengers, we continue our ride to Lakeport all the way along the shore of "Paugus Bay", past seasonal residences on the right of the train with the cool blue water of Paugus Bay on the left. Several Marinas are passed through as well as the one mile shoreline of "Southdown Shores", a gated condominium community. As we pass through their marina and beach area it is a pleasure waving to residents and their friends to arrive in Lakeport, the main turn around point of our journey. There is no station here so passengers relax on board while the engine crew works to turn the passenger train around.
Peabody Home residents, family, and staff have enjoyed this annual excursion for the past 8 years. A beautiful entrance into the fall season of New Hampshire.
